Originally a 17th century cattle drovers’ inn, the Taychreggan Hotel by Taynuilt, near Oban, has welcomed guests, including Samuel Johnson and James Boswell, for hundreds of years.

A four star Scottish country house hotel, it has a jaw-dropping location on the shores of the aptly named Loch Awe. Surrounded by mountains, the loch, forests and an abundance of wildlife, Taychreggan makes a perfect venue for the walker, fisherman, cyclist or photographer.

The AA have called it one of Britain’s Most Romantic Hotels so it’s no surprise that the Taychreggan Hotel in Argyll is the ideal venue for a romantic getaway.

Country house hotel in Argyll

The Taychreggan Hotel has 16 bedrooms split between the original 17th century part of the house and the 20th century wing.

The views from the older part of the hotel are either loch views or courtyard-facing overlooking the Orangery roof. A couple of them boast four poster beds. The bathrooms have all been extensively modernised and afford home from home comforts.

All of the bedrooms are ensuite and have plush fabrics, fluffy dressing gowns, flat screen TVs, full WiFi, bottled water, tea and coffee making trays and a hair-dryer.

Scottish restaurant near Oban

The Taychreggan has long had an excellent reputation for its food and holds two AA Rosettes. Be it the locally sourced sausages for the full Scottish breakfast in the morning or the home grown herbs that decorate their a la carte menu in the evening – it all adds up to an admirable standard of cuisine.

West Coast whisky

The Drovers Bar at Taychreggan offers a wide range of malt whiskies to be enjoyed in the bar or in one of the two cosy lounges. Budding snooker champs can pot a few balls in the snooker room or you may prefer just to sit and read in the sun trap Orangerie.

Activities on Scotland’s West Coast

Nearby Kilchurn Castle and St Conan’s Kirk are both beautiful and much photographed. In the local area, there are cruises on Loch Etive and day cruises to Mull. At the foot of Ben Cruachan and with views up Loch Etive, the Taynuilt Golf Club has a challenging 9-hole parkland course.

Alternatively, just take it easy and roam along the shores of Loch Awe – it’s what guests at Taychreggan Hotel near Oban have done for hundreds of years.
